There is a new trend of teaching martial arts - through online video. People are always looking for the easiest, quickest path. The problem is that you cannot learn a martial art properly form a video.
I personally know a few people who do this on the website "Youtube". They are very nice people and have a lot to offer. But even they would admit, in order to fully learn you have to eventually find a school. After all, this is how they learned originally.
Ultimately the problem lies in the fact that there are those who only learn from videos and then go on to teach others. What you wind up with is thousands of people who have no clue to what they are doing and may get themselves or others hurt or even killed. Videos are great for brushing up on a technique or sharing a technique with others but when you rely on them to teach you actual self-defense, you are entering a dangerous area.
People will claim that the reason they study from videos is that there is no decent martial art school in their area. Any martial art school is better than training solely from a video. Sometimes you have to travel to train. It is part of the tradition of the martial arts. If you are only looking for convenience, you are going to be disappointed. Often people who are more comfortable training alone are usually introverts. They view themselves as social outcasts. This is another reason why getting out and going to a real school is so important.
There is a lot more to martial arts than just kicking and screaming. The interaction with others in a real martial art school is very important. The personal interaction with your Sensei is priceless.
